Poor Robert Sánchez. He had just popped his head above the parapet this week and claimed he was in the “best shape of his career”… and we could all predict what was coming next.

The Spanish goalkeeper made a mad dash off his line in an attempt to recover a loose ball, but ended up looking foolish as Georginio Rutter managed to head it into the net Sanchez had just left.

This mistake seemed to scare him – as we saw last season, he often follows one mistake with another – and his play on the ball was terrible afterward. The start of the second half brought no relief, and he began that period with two sloppy efforts that had Enzo Maresca screaming.

Sanchez made a few good saves later in the match, but the damage was done, the downward spiral of confidence had begun. Maresca will surely be thinking more than ever about summer signing Filip Jorgensen and his potential to one day be the team’s first option.

Difficult circumstances for the goalkeeper to earn his place

Jorgensen hasn’t looked very impressive in his games either, so it’s not like it’ll be easy for him to force his way onto a team that’s doing well and winning, even if it’s is despite Sanchez rather than because of him sometimes.

Jorgensen’s other problem is that the games he plays – in domestic cups and the Conference League – are usually against teams who are behind and barely test him, so he is very difficult to impress defensively. However, he will have a lot of ball and will be able to try to show the calm and confidence that Sanchez lacked today.

We still don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon, but Sanchez’s case for flaws is only growing.
