Panchayat Election 2024: Punjab village and sarpanch election breaks records with Rs 2 cr offered in bid | Nation

PTC Press Office: As the 2024 Panchayat elections approach, the political landscape in Punjab has reached fever pitch, especially in Dera Baba Nanak constituency of Gurdaspur district. Hardorwal Kala village made headlines by becoming the first in Punjab to witness a staggering bid of Rs 2 crore for the post of Sarpanch, setting a new record in the state.

Three parties competing for role of Sarpanch

Reports from local sources reveal that three political parties have claimed the post of Sarpanch in Hardorwal village, triggering a bidding war among their candidates. The bidders included notable personalities such as Atma Singh, son of Vasban Singh, Jaswinder Singh Bedi, son of Ajit Singh, and Nirvair Singh, son of Harjit Singh. Among these suitors, Atma Singh emerged as the favorite with a bid of Rs 2 crore.

Despite the intense competition, representatives of major parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal did not participate in the nomination process, leaving the competition to the three candidates.

Bidding process and current ranking

The bidding process was announced at the village Gurdwara Sahib, emphasizing that the highest bidder would get the role of Sarpanch. As things stand, Atma Singh’s bid of Rs 2 crore is unmatched, while Jaswinder Singh Bedi has submitted a bid of Rs 1 crore. The auction was set to conclude today, allowing last-minute bidders to make higher bids.

If no new bids are submitted before the deadline, Atma Singh’s bid will be finalized as the winning bid. BJP leader Vijay Soni has already congratulated Atma Singh for his record-breaking candidacy, saying the BJP remains the only party in Punjab committed to the welfare of its people.

As the deadline approaches, the political atmosphere remains tense with all eyes on Hardorwal Kala to see if anyone will challenge Singh’s substantial offer or if it will mark a new chapter in local governance in Punjab .
