“It’s been a privilege” – Jackie Lennox’s Takeaway in Cork to close after 73 years

“It’s been a privilege” – Jackie Lennox’s Takeaway in Cork to close after 73 years

Jackie Lennox’s Takeaway on Bandon Road in Cork has confirmed it will close its doors on October 6 – although it is still one of Cork’s most popular fast food restaurants.

Known as a post-match treat enjoyed by generations of Cork sports fans, Lennox’s was also enjoyed by generations of students who lived along Bandon Road and attended University College Cork (UCC) and the Munster Technology University (MTU).

In a social media post, Frances and Brian Lennox confirmed the shock closing “with heavy hearts”.

The last orders will be taken on Friday at the famous crusher.

“It may seem strange to make this decision when we are at our busiest, but time has slipped by and we are unable to cope with the burden of our success,” they posted.

Staff were informed of the closure on Monday – and tributes to the family business were paid by Cork politicians, business leaders and sporting officials.

Lennox’s was closely associated with Cork sport since its opening in 1951 and, over the years, it became particularly synonymous with the GAA and Cork football.

“From humble beginnings above a shoemaker’s shop in the north of the city, Eileen and John opened their current shop on Bandon Road,” the company posted.

“With the help of football legend and John’s teammate, David Noonan, and Eileen’s father, Con O’Callaghan, and brother Sean (both GAA servants), the business grew into a huge success.”

The couple raised nine children, seven of whom were born above the store.

“All have worked at some point in the workshop over the years,” the statement added.

“We would like to thank our local suppliers who have always offered the best and freshest of their products.

“For our loyal colleagues, many of whom have been part of our family for several generations, this has been a privilege.

“To our loyal customers, thank you very much – you have been a pleasure to serve and will be a part of us forever.

“Please remember us fondly and we hope we have made a small contribution to Cork culture.”
