He lived on the third floor of a four-storey building in the Courtpara area of Kushtia.

According to police, residents found Rubel with his hands and feet tied with white rope and his mouth covered with a piece of red cloth. Later, he was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital.

Additional Commissioner of Police Abu Russell said the matter was being investigated and legal action would be taken against those involved.

As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way around 12:30 am, doctors said.

Dr Mithun Chakraborty, doctor on duty at Kushtia General Hospital, said Rubel was admitted around 11pm in a critical condition with head injuries.

Anisur Rahman, a hostel mate who took Rubel to the hospital, said they lived on the third floor with nine other people in three rooms, with Rubel sharing a room with two others. Around 10:30 p.m., they heard screams coming from Rubel’s room and rushed downstairs to find him tied up and lying on the floor. With the help of locals, they took him to the hospital.

Rubel seemed worried since the afternoon. In the evening, they had discussed the hostel expenses, but he had no idea how the incident happened or who was responsible, Anisur added.

Kamrul Hasan Shuvo, a witness, reported that when he arrived at the hostel around half past midnight, police were questioning Rubel’s roommates, Hridoy and Raisul, as well as others.

Residents demanded a thorough investigation and exemplary sanctions against the culprits.

Another resident, Mahim, said the roof of the building is usually locked, with only the owner and a student having access to the key.

Mahim thinks the police will find out more details through interrogation.
