Victor Wembanyama sets next big goal: elevating his Spurs teammates

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama isn’t shying away from the expectations surrounding him after an impressive rookie season in the NBA.

However, facing pressure from the outside world, he clearly knows what he is focusing on.

“I have no real responsibility to any of you,” Wembanyama said Monday while speaking to the media. “Just the guys in the locker room and the training room with me, that’s it.”

At 7-foot-4, Wembanyama is already being hailed as a transformative player in the league, with analysts and colleagues predicting greatness in his future.

Yet the young star remains impervious to outside opinions, convinced that his path to success lies not in media narratives but in the relationships he builds with his teammates.

“I know I will eventually be part of these conversations,” Wembanyama said. “But my focus will be on winning and helping my teammates, to make them better.”

His goal this summer has been to refine the fundamentals, an approach that speaks volumes about his maturity.

While many would expect a player with unique physical gifts to rely on pure talent, Wembanyama understands the importance of mastering the basics.

“The more I progress in my career, the more I realize how important it is to work on fundamentals,” Wembanyama said. “This summer, there was a lot of emphasis on my game, like taking advantage of very simple situations.”

One area that has gotten a lot of attention is his finishing around the basket. Despite his size, Wembanyama knows that finesse is just as important as power, especially when facing the speed and agility of smaller guards.

“I worked a lot on the finishing,” he explained. “Finishing things that might be natural for any other player, a goalkeeper for example, but these are things I had to focus on mentally and physically.”

For Wembanyama, success isn’t just about dazzling with blockbuster plays. It’s about constantly finding ways to win and elevating the game of those around you.

As his career progresses, there is no doubt that his methodical approach and commitment to fundamentals will only solidify his position as one of the NBA’s next big stars.

For the Spurs, this is a promising sign. There is no doubt that Wembanyama has the potential to become the next great of all time. If the team is to succeed in the years to come, their influence will be monumental.

And that should be a scary prospect for the rest of the league.
