Terrifier 3's Bloody Opening Sequence Leads to Walkouts and More, and I Love the Director's Response

Art the Clown’s actions always speak louder than his words, and I’m pretty sure he would strain his neck muscles from nodding in agreement that Damien Leone Terrifying 3 is among the most anticipated coming horrors of 2024 or any other year. (Check my opinion here!) But it seems that even those most eager to see the new sequel didn’t have much luck once it actually started, as evidenced by reports of audience members leaving after the first five minutes.

At least that’s what happened at the film’s first screening in the UK, where Terrifying 3 had such an impact on the first crowd across the pond that eleven people walked out of the film and did not return, and nine of these exits took place after the opening scene. I can only hope these people swallowed their pride and didn’t ask for any refunds.

Someone who probably wanted to rinse their mouth out before swallowing more would be the only viewer who vomited from the very first Terrifying 3 scene, according to BoyBible. I don’t really want to know how this particular detail was confirmed by anyone involved, and I’m happy to just believe it happened without physical proof, since director Damien Leone teased that the the new film would make fans vomit even before filming began.

After the Terrifying 3 Walkouts began to make the rounds, with representatives of the film reaching out to share how the inspiring filmmaker himself reacted to learning what his film did to his British audience. In the words of Léone:

Usually people leave a movie because it sucks. When someone walks out of a Terrifier movie, it’s a testament to the special makeup team. I guess we did our job!

Damien Leone has already mentioned the fact that Hollywood studios had expressed their interest in producing a film. Creepy sequel, given that the second film grossed over $15 million at the box office on a budget of $250,000. But the director already knew that anyone reading the first five pages of Art the Clown’s latest release would immediately try to get him to tone down the content, and that’s just not the kind of creator Leone is. He knows what his audience wants, and he’s here in droves with Terrifying 3.

As someone who attended the world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2024, I know exactly what’s going on in that opening scene, and I completely understand how it might make a more sensitive audience member want to walk away from it . What puzzles me, however, is that anyone would walk into Terrifying 3 it’s not entirely comfortable with any extreme of horror imaginable. The first two films didn’t really protect against goddamn carnage.
