Second teen charged with capital murder in Montgomery triple homicide at Hispanic grocery store

A second teenager has been charged with killing three men in June at a Hispanic grocery store in Montgomery.

DeQundray Danell Savage, 18, is charged with capital murder of two or more people and capital murder during a robbery in the shooting deaths of George Elijah, Jr., 50, Daniel Lopez, 20, and Romero Lopez, 43, according to court records. made public on Thursday.

Jarques Butler, 18, had already been charged.

Savage has been held at the Montgomery County Detention Center since July after his bond was revoked on separate charges of robbery and attempted murder.

He and Butler remain held without bail.

Police and firefighters responded to the Tienda Los Hermanos grocery store in the 4100 block of Troy Highway around 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, following a call of people shot.

Police found the three injured victims at the store. The Lopezes were father and son.

Elijah and Daniel Lopez were pronounced dead at the scene.

Romero Lopez was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Mayor Steven Reed and former Acting Police Chief John Hall held a press conference the next day to discuss this horrific crime.

“The situation last night was terrible. It was tragic, it was something that couldn’t be excused and it shouldn’t be,” Reed said. “People who work in their community…should not be preyed upon, should not be targeted. And that’s what we got last night.

A $40,000 reward – including $10,000 from Mayor Steven Reed – was offered in the case.
