California is home to two first ZEVs: the nation’s first solar-powered electric vehicle truck stop and the world’s largest fleet of Amazon electric trucks

SACRAMENTO – In the last two days alone, California has seen two firsts in zero-emission vehicles: the nation’s first solar-powered electric truck charging depot and Amazon’s largest fleet of electric trucks in any state. country.

These two steps illustrate Governor Gavin Newsom’s commitment to building more, faster, to meet California’s top-tier climate goals. In recent years, the state has stepped up efforts to build a larger and better electric vehicle (EV) charging network to support both light and heavy-duty ZEVs.

This work is critical to meeting the state’s goals of selling 100% new ZEV cars by 2035 and 100% ZEV medium- and heavy-duty trucks by 2045. Find other ZEV projects in your community at build .ca.gov.

“California continues to lead the way in setting world-leading climate goals. No other state has created the type of environment where Amazon, WattEV and other companies can take the lead on sustainability and take major steps like deploying electric trucks and charging infrastructure.

California’s climate action continues to boost our economy and create jobs.

Nation’s first solar-powered electric truck charging depot opens in Bakersfield

California officials helped celebrate the grand opening of WattEV’s third and largest electric truck charging depot in Bakersfield on Monday. It will be the nation’s first electric truck stop with a solar-powered microgrid and battery energy storage system. The truck depot will serve heavy-duty electric trucks with routes connecting the San Joaquin Valley’s agricultural sector and growing distribution warehouse region to the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, as well as inland destinations throughout all of Southern California and the West.

The filing was supported by a $5 million grant from the California Energy Commission – part of the California governor’s multibillion-dollar climate commitment.

California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph noted the importance of this project in the fight toward zero-emission trucking and meeting California’s climate goals.

The world’s largest fleet of Amazon electric trucks hits the roads of Los Angeles

California officials joined Los Angeles Mayor Bass and partners from the Biden administration and the Port of Los Angeles to launch Amazon’s largest fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks in the world earlier today. The company is deploying nearly 50 heavy-duty electric trucks across Southern California, adding to the hundreds of electric vans already deployed across the state.

Heavy-duty trucks are part of the company’s first- and second-mile delivery operations, transporting goods from where they were first manufactured to the company’s distribution network. Amazon has already deployed hundreds of electric vans across the state that provide the final part of delivery operations: delivering goods from distribution centers to people’s homes.

“We are proud to launch our largest fleet of heavy-duty electric vehicles to date in California,” said Udit Madan, Amazon vice president of Worldwide Operations. “Heavy trucking is a particularly difficult area to decarbonize, which makes us even more excited to have these vehicles on the roads today. We will use what we learn from the deployment of these vehicles as we continue to identify and invest in solutions to reduce emissions in our transportation network and to make a broader impact on sustainability in the trucking industry.
