Chesty Puller 10K prepares for 16th year of running – Daily Press

WEST POINT – The annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K is scheduled for Saturday.

Race organizers said there had been a record number of registrations for the race, which is in its 16th year. Nearly 200 people participated last year in what is one of West Point’s most anticipated events.

The 10K is named for West Point native Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine in American history. Puller, who got his nickname from his barrel chest, was awarded five Naval Crosses and the Army Distinguished Service Cross, participating in campaigns during World War II and Korea.

The start of the race is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Registration is still available online in non-medal categories at Chestypuller10K.com. Registrants will always receive a racing jersey, a meal and a cold drink. Prices will increase on Friday.

Packet pickup will take place Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Food Trucks by the River in West Point and on race day from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the start/finish line.

The first person to virtually complete the race — Patrick Murphy in Durham, North Carolina — was recognized Monday on the event’s Facebook page. According to organizers on the event’s website, “we look forward to welcoming visitors from across the country and cheering you on as you conquer the Twin Bridges!” »
