Edson Alvarez breaks silence on possible £40m move to Manchester United

Edson Alvarez has been linked with Manchester United in recent days and he has now spoken out about a possible move.

Signing a midfielder is among Manchester United’s top priorities this summer and one of the linked options is a former Ajax player who Erik ten Hag knows well.

It’s Edson Alvarez who is now a target for Ineos just 12 months after making a £35million move to West Ham.

He became the fifth former Ajax player to join United since Ten Hag’s arrival if the move goes through.

Now the player himself has broken his silence on the potential move, which seems like a logical connection.

Edson Alvarez breaks silence on possible Manchester United transfer

Alvarez was linked with a move to Old Trafford this week and that’s no surprise given the link with Ten Hag and the fact he works extremely well with Lisandro Martinez, and the Argentine has previously suggested a desire to play with him again.

Speaking during the Copa America tournament with Mexico, Alvarez has now broken his silence when asked if he would move to Old Trafford, as cited by Metro.

“I can only tell you that I am focused on what I have to do. I know that the Copa América is a very important tournament where the eyes of the world are mainly on us,” Alvarez explained ahead of the Copa America opening match in Mexico.

“Later it will be time to see what exists or what does not exist.”

This sounds a lot like Alvarez is hedging his bets and not wanting to comment on this potential move.

West Ham have reportedly slapped a £40million price tag on Alvarez, a reasonable amount for a player of his quality.

Rio Ferdinand praised Alvarez but United should only move if other options fail

Alvarez is a good defensive midfielder and there’s no denying that, however, he is limited in what he can do and hasn’t set the world on fire for the Hammers in his debut campaign.

That being said, Rio Ferdinand would likely be enthusiastic about the move as he praised Alvarez in 2022 during a Champions League broadcast on TNT Sports: “He does some things that you don’t necessarily see.

“He’s certainly not Instagrammable at all, but he does the whole thing of breaking up play against the opposition and allowing other players who might be better on the ball to go and play.

“These types of players are so valuable, you appreciate them so much when they are in your team because they give you a platform to go and play the football that you love to play.”

Alvarez wouldn’t be a bad choice this summer, but he definitely shouldn’t be the first pick. If it were to happen, it would pretty much completely free up Kobbie Mainoo given his defensive prowess and hopefully eliminate the problem of gaps in midfield that we had to endure last season.
