Portugal were unexpectedly beaten by Georgia in Euro 2024 on Thursday (IST), with Cristiano Ronaldo unable to score again. Georgia, competing in their first European Championship, needed a win to qualify for the round of 16 when they faced Portugal in Gelsenkirchen.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal had already secured their place in the round of 16 as Group F winners, prompting coach Roberto Martinez to make eight changes to the squad. Georgia took the lead in the first two minutes, thanks to a superb finish from their standout player, Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, the Euro record holder with 14 goals, is still waiting for his first goal in this year’s tournament.

Ranked 74th in the world rankings, Georgia will face top favorites Spain in the next round on Sunday in Cologne, having advanced as one of the top four third-ranked teams.

The match also included a scary moment when a fan nearly kicked Ronaldo after he jumped from the stands as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner headed towards the tunnel. The supporter was a few centimeters from Ronaldo, but the stewards managed to intervene just in time.
