Odisha train crash: IRCTC denies Congress claims, says ticket cancellations have not increased

On June 6, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) denied the Congress’s claims that thousands of Indians had cancelled their tickets following the unfortunate accident in Odisha. The IRCTC even called the reports inaccurate.

On Twitter, IRCTC wrote, “This is factually incorrect. Cancellations have not increased. On the contrary, cancellations have decreased from 7.7 Lakh on 01.06.23 to 7.5 Lakh on 03.06.23.”

Earlier on Monday, former union minister and Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das claimed that thousands of people had canceled their tickets after the accident and did not feel safe to travel.

“Such a train accident has never happened in the past. Hundreds of people have lost their lives and more than a thousand people have been injured. This incident has hurt everyone. Thousands of people have cancelled their tickets after the accident. They feel that travelling in the train is not safe,” Das said, speaking in Hindi.

In Friday’s train accident in Odisha’s Balasore, at least 275 people died and more than 1,000 were injured.

The accident involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express train, the Coromandel Express and the goods train on three separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district. No less than 17 wagons of these two passenger trains derailed and were seriously damaged during this fatal accident.

Work to restore the accident site for regular train traffic has been completed.
