Londoners shocked by £25-a-head pub quiz (and ‘disappointing’ price)

Notting Hill’s trendy pub The Pelican is not your average London pub. It’s home to celebrities like singer Dua Lipa, who was recently spotted there. But it still has its traditional features. Think weekly pub quiz, a staple of pubs across the country.

The Pelican quiz is hosted by actor Seb de Souza (Skins, Normal People, The Great). But don’t expect to pay the usual £1 entry fee. At the Pelican, entry costs £25 per person (which, in fairness, includes a drink).

Is this a ploy to attract only the most hardcore quiz-goers, or a clever strategy to keep out the riffraff? Expectations for this quiz are understandably high when it carries such a price tag, but we heard from one recent winning team who felt a little “disappointed” (and, in their words, “shortchanged”).

With a team of seven, they paid a total of £175 to play. After crushing the competition with their quiz knowledge, they took home their grand prize: a £70 bar tab. It seems the house always wins. But it’s the participation that counts, right?
