After receiving feedback from members of the public regarding the inability to see approaching buses while waiting at a bus stop due to the pillars, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will review the issue and consider making improvements.

The bus stop in question is located outside Marine Parade MRT station, opposite Parkway Parade.

Unlike most bus stops, the bus stop pillars are located at the front along the road.

In a Facebook post on July 6, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat explained that he understood that the design caused some inconvenience to commuters and asked the LTA to consider solutions to make the bus stop more user-friendly.

Construction of pillars behind bus stop will hamper sewer maintenance

Chee explained that since there were underground drains located behind the bus stop, building pillars on them would hinder necessary future maintenance work.

He said the LTA had considered other locations for the bus stop, but decided to work around site constraints as it would allow commuters to walk a shorter distance from the MRT station.

Chee acknowledged that the location of the pillars obscures commuters’ view and suggested that the LTA consider installing a camera facing oncoming traffic.

The images would then be broadcast on screens inside the bus stop.

“I have asked the LTA to consider this suggestion and other solutions to make the bus stop more user-friendly,” Chee said.

He said if the proposal works, the LTA could extend it to other bus stops with similar site constraints.

Two bus stops to speed up boarding

Besides blocking the view of approaching buses, Chee noted that some commuters were confused about which buses stopped at which bay, as the bus stop has two different bus bays.

Chee said the LTA had explained that there were two bus bays to speed up boarding.

He said the LTA would improve signage at the bus stop to more clearly indicate to commuters where to wait for their bus.

Chee added that the LTA will provide an update on any improvements to be made after a review.
