Matthews considers changes to short-term rental restrictions

The city of Matthews is considering changes to restrict short-term rentals within city limits.

Short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO have grown in popularity in recent years. While some are capitalizing on the rental, others are pushing back against the industry’s growth.

In North Carolina, questions remain about what cities and counties can do about rental restrictions.

In 2022, a lawsuit against the City of Wilmington went to the Court of Appeals and some of Wilmington’s restrictions were found to be “illegal.” Yet attempts to impose regulations continue.

In Matthews, the city is considering zoning restrictions, such as requiring separation between rentals.

On Monday night, the City Council will consider whether to adopt new restrictions. If approved, the city will be required to hold a public hearing, which could take place as early as the end of the month.

Matthews isn’t the only place in our area trying to restrict rentals. Iredell County implemented its own restrictions earlier this year. Now, they’re facing two separate lawsuits, and the new rules won’t be enforced until those are concluded.

Matthews Board of Commissioners meets Monday at 5:30 p.m.
