New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson is reportedly wondering whether or not he should make a huge sacrifice for his team in the near future.

The Knicks could offer Brunson a four-year, $157 million contract extension starting Friday, with the All-Star point guard reportedly considering a deal, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic.

Brunson’s new deal would give him a significant raise over the four-year, $104 million contract he signed with the Knicks in 2022. But if Brunson waits one year, he would be eligible for a five-year, $269.1 million max contract as a free agent.

Brunson would forfeit more than $100 million in guaranteed money if he chooses to sign the deal that will almost certainly be on the table later this week.

Brunson is considering signing for two reasons, according to the report. The first is security. The 6-foot-1 point guard reportedly considers the Knicks his “family” and has no plans to play anywhere else. Signing an extension frees him from worrying about his contract situation for the remainder of his prime years.

The second problem would be the new rules on the second deck. With the huge penalties imposed on teams that pay the luxury tax, Brunson might want to help his team avoid having trouble keeping its current roster intact.

Brunson was one of last season’s superstars, averaging 28.7 points and 6.7 assists per game on 47.9 percent shooting.

Brunson has made some big moves throughout the 2023-24 season. But none would be more significant than giving the Knicks a potential nine-figure cap break.
