Why You Should Avoid Using Drawers in Hotel Rooms

The length of your stay in a hotel room will likely depend on how you unpack your suitcases. Longer stays will likely mean that you’ll try to make things more comfortable by unpacking your suitcases completely. Using the closet, shelves, and dresser drawers is there for just that convenience.

If you really want to put a bunch of our clothes and other items in drawers and even arrange them on shelves in hotel rooms, be sure to bring a flashlight or ask to borrow one from the resort’s housekeeping department.

According to Travel and Leisure Magazine, Bed bugs not only hide in dark areas of mattresses like seams, but have also been found hiding in sofa cushions, bed pillows, as well as in the seams and cracks of nightstands, desks, and dressers.

When checking other furniture for signs of bed bugs in a hotel room, a flashlight can help illuminate dark areas and allow you to see into crevices where bed bugs may be hiding.

As we know, even if you never see bed bugs, they love to hitchhike in luggage and clothing.

Although the chance of encountering bed bugs is relatively low, according to Terminix, it is never zero since you don’t know who has stayed in your room before. We’ve all heard of bed bug outbreaks in various cities and hotels, even with diligent housekeeping.

These nocturnal insects feed on human blood and can hide in tiny crevices, making them difficult to detect. By being vigilant and knowing how to detect bed bugs in a hotel room, you can minimize the risk of encountering these unwanted pests during your travels.

Using that flashlight, or just your naked eye, here are four signs of bed bugs according to Terminix not only on our mattress but in drawers.

      • Dark spots, small spots or spots that could be blood.
      • Unexplained bites on your own body.
      • Yellowish exoskeletons/foam, shed by bedbugs
      • Actually, they are bedbugs

As I mentioned above, even the most thorough cleaning by housekeeping staff may not eliminate these disgusting little nibblers because not only are the mattresses not cleaned, according to the Escape website, but the insides of the drawers are not part of the cleaning process.
