“England must consider signing a Premier League manager who is not highly regarded – Klopp and Pep are too expensive”

With players like Graham Potter and Eddie Howe in the mix, Gary O’Neil should certainly be considered for the England job.

If the FA wants to go with a name that is not glamorous and a young English manager again, then they need to interview the Wolves boss. He is young, ambitious and has done a very good job during his time as manager of the club. O’Neil also had a better record at the club than Gareth Southgate. The Wolves manager kept Bournemouth in the Premier League.

He was then sacked by the Cherries but got back on his feet, took a tough job at Wolves and excelled again. The Black Country club may have been experiencing a dip in form towards the end of last season in terms of results. But he took the job in the late summer knowing that budgets were tight after Julen Lopetegui left because of the purse strings.

O’Neil has been able to get the team to play attractive football and ensured there is a strong team spirit to take them to the big leagues. Relegation has never been a worry. He makes a lot of sense if England want a manager who can play more attractive football than Southgate but can match the former Three Lions boss in terms of team cohesion and lack of ego.

O’Neil at least deserves the chance to make his case to the FA board. He has worked his way up the coaching ladder from assistant coach of Liverpool’s Under-23s to Premier League manager. He doesn’t have much experience, but neither does Southgate.
