Bail revoked for Dorchester man seized with gun, drugs and cash

BOSTON, July 16, 2024 – A Dorchester man had his previous bond revoked at Dorchester BMC Monday after being charged with unlawful possession of a large-capacity firearm with the serial number defaced and trafficking fentanyl, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

KELVIN ORTIZ-GUERRERO, 25, was charged with unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, unlawful possession of ammunition and trafficking fentanyl over 10 grams.

Judge Erika P. Reis set bail at $10,000 on the new charges and revoked Ortiz-Guerrero’s bail in an open case involving negligent operation of a motor vehicle in Worcester County. Ortiz-Guerrero will return to court Aug. 8 for a probable cause hearing.

On July 10, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Boston police noticed a red Jeep Cherokee on Blue Hill Avenue with an expired inspection sticker and excessively tinted windows. Officers observed the vehicle weaving in and out of traffic and making improper lane changes. Officers stopped the vehicle in front of 814 Blue Hill Avenue.

Ortiz-Guerrero was a passenger in the car registered to his mother. Officers reported that Ortiz-Guerrero and the driver were nervous and that Ortiz-Guerrero was pushing against the passenger door. They then asked both men to exit the vehicle.

Officers discovered a hidden compartment in the passenger door window. Inside, they found a 9mm Springfield Hellcat firearm, with the serial number removed, loaded with 12 rounds. Officers also found more than 12 grams of suspected fentanyl in the glove compartment and a scale in a hidden compartment in the center console. Officers found drug residue and a bullet under the driver’s seat and recovered $1,060 during a search of Ortiz-Guerrero.

Officers arrested Ortiz-Guerrero at the scene.

“This incident involves a combination of factors that, when combined, have a degrading effect on our neighborhoods: guns, drugs and money. Every time an illegal gun is recovered, it increases the safety of our officers and residents, and moves us forward in our efforts to reduce gun violence throughout our city,” Hayden said.

All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
