SRP and Aypa Power announce new battery storage system to meet growing energy demand

PHOENIX, Arizona, July 19 — THE Salt River Projecta public electricity utility and electricity supplier, released the following news:

Salt River Project (SRP) and Aypa Power have entered into an agreement to supply 250 megawatts (MW) / 1,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of new energy storage to Arizona grid.

The Signal Butte Energy Storage Project will be a 250 MW, four-hour battery energy storage system located in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor in Mesa, Arizona. The project will use lithium-ion technology and will have the capacity to supply electricity to more than 50,000 average-sized residential homes over a four-hour period. The project is expected to be operational by mid-2026.

“SRP is proud of our continued efforts to deploy battery storage, which will help us maximize the use of renewable resources and decarbonize our portfolio in the years to come,” said Bobby OlsenSRP Associate Managing Director and Director of Planning, Strategy and Sustainability. “The Signal Butte project will also help us meet the growing capacity needs of the Phoenix Metropolitan area.”

“We are proud to announce our first energy storage project in Arizonamarking an important milestone in our efforts to support one of the fastest growing markets in the country,” said Moe HajabedCEO of Aypa Power“The Signal Butte project builds on SRP’s commitments to sustainability and helps maintain the reliability needs of its customers.”

Signal Butte was selected through the SRP’s 2023 All-Source Request for Proposals process. The project was jointly submitted by Wind turbine, LP (Eolian), the original developer of the project, and Aypa PowerThe project will be owned and operated by Aypa Powerwhich purchased this advanced battery energy storage project from Eolian, taking charge of the remaining development and construction required to bring the project online. Once online, SRP will have full control over the storage system dispatch and will decide when to deploy energy generation to its grid. The project will typically load when energy costs are lowest and will be discharged in the early evening when demand is highest.

“Situating Signal Butte next to a substation serving multiple data centers in operation and under construction was no coincidence when we began development of the project in 2018. The continued growth of our economy depends now more than ever on deploying fast, flexible resources in the right places to provide critical instantaneous capacity, and battery energy storage projects like Signal Butte can be built at a speed that matches and enables continued rapid growth in electricity demand,” added Aaron ZubatyCEO of Wind turbine, LP

SRP was an early adopter of battery storage technology, which can help it meet growing peak demand and supplement utility resources like flexible natural gas to maintain reliable and affordable power supplies for customers.

SRP currently has nearly 1,300 MW of battery and pumped hydroelectric plants and 2,300 megawatts of carbon-free resources serving its customers. SRP also has storage and solar capacity under development that, once operational by the end of 2027, will enable nearly half of its generation to be carbon-free.
