Ithaca Considers Bird-Friendly Building Law

Ithaca Considers Bird-Friendly Building Law

The Ithaca City Council will soon debate a new law aimed at protecting birds from impacts on buildings. The ordinance, proposed by Fourth Ward Councilman Patrick Kuehl and first reported by The Ithaca Voice, requires new buildings to use bird-friendly materials.

The “bird bill” would require manufacturers to meet standards to prevent bird collisions, similar to New York City’s 2020 law. Kuehl is working with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on the proposal.

A public forum to gather community feedback will be held on July 27 at 3 p.m. at Kendal in Ithaca.
