Stanley have bolstered their defensive ranks ahead of the new season with the addition of Donald Love from Morecambe.

Love, who played under Ged Brannan at Mazuma Stadium last season, has signed a two-year contract with the Reds.

The 29-year-old started out in Manchester United’s youth ranks and made two first-team appearances at Old Trafford.

He then played for Sunderland, Shrewsbury and Salford before joining Morecambe in the summer of 2022.

Love has made 60 appearances for the Shrimps over the last two seasons and has also worn the captain’s armband.

Brannan told the club website: “Donald was at Morecambe with me last year and he was captain with Faz (Farrend Rawson).

“He’s a fantastic player, perfect for the dressing room, experienced, proven and a valuable asset to our team. I can’t wait to start playing with him.”

“Donald is a versatile player, he can play full-back, centre-back in a three-man midfield and central midfield. He is a top player and the younger players will benefit from his experience.”

Stanley kick off the new campaign with a trip to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday August 10.

Love added: “I’m really pleased to have made it. When John (Doolan) and Ged told me to come and train and get a feel for the place, I knew straight away I wanted to sign.

“I didn’t really know it was a derby until I went to Morecambe but hopefully we’ll go and beat them this year.

“Knowing Ged, Faz as well – I’ve known Faz for two years – it was really good to come and meet John and then have the chance to sign.”
