Preventing fires on the Mesa

MESA, Colo. (KJCT) – Mesa County is investing resources to protect communities on the Mesa from potentially dangerous wildfires. They are taking a proactive step with the Colorado State Forest Service to make this happen.

Mesa County commissioners recently approved this a grant worth $241,314. This grant will support the Mesa Creek/Coon Creak Estates Fuel Treatment Project. Forest Service rangers say Gambel Oak is their main target. “There are other shrubs in the area, but it is predominantly Gambel oak. The oak can burn very hot and is compact and spindly. If there were a fire in that area, that could easily happen take out” says Hallie Flynn, a forest ranger with the Colorado State Forest Service.

Gambel oaks usually grow as large as a shrub or small tree. The forest service plans to start the project in spring 2025 and complete it later that summer. They hope to prevent potentially dangerous forest fires and pave the way for innovation.

“The goal of this project is to break Gambel Oak’s fuel continuity and reduce fire risk to surrounding communities. This includes improving wildlife habitats and ensuring watershed resilience,” Flynn said.

This type of work has already been carried out in the area. A contractor will operate machines to cut the vegetation into fine chips.

Participating private landowners may receive reimbursement for treatment costs during the life of the project.
