In a major development in the Kolkata rape and murder case, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the West Bengal government’s plea and upheld the bail of Lahri during the RG Kar College protests. Significantly, the Supreme Court upheld the bail granted to Sayan Lahri, a key figure who organised a student protest after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Bengal.

Earlier, the West Bengal government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court claiming that the Paschim Banga Chhtra Samaj leader had led a violent march towards the state secretariat on August 27 under the guise of a peaceful protest.

The West Bengal government said in its plea that it was not given adequate opportunity to oppose the court’s order granting Lahri protection and termed the Calcutta High Court’s decision to grant bail to Lahri as erroneous. Last week, the Calcutta High Court granted bail to Lahiri.

It is noteworthy that the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, an unregistered student group, was one of the two organisations that called for the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ on August 27 and Sayan Lahiri was arrested on August 27 for playing an active role in leading the rally.
