MPS Students Ready for First Day of School, What Can They Expect?

MILWAUKEE — Tens of thousands of students will head to Milwaukee Public Schools Tuesday, all at once, to kick off the new school year.

For the 2024-25 school year, MPS has moved from two school calendars to a single district-wide calendar.

Bus pick-up and drop-off times will not be affected by the change, but the district hopes to save money on transportation under one schedule.

The change within MPS isn’t limited to the calendar. With MPS interim Superintendent Galvan at the helm, the district is also implementing for the first time a “culture, climate and alternatives to suspension toolkit.”

The toolkit will focus on topics such as community building, social-emotional learning and mediation.

At the same time, school resource officers (SROs) will return to MPS, likely in late fall, following a state directive. The district is months behind in implementing the directive.

“I feel confident and ready to come back,” Khaydin said.

To prepare for the schedule change, Khaydin, 10, said he has been going to bed earlier than he has all summer for the past week.
