Following the announcement of the show’s cancellation, Revri wrote a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking the creatives behind the series and the audience.

He said: “As this chapter comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on how incredible the last three years have been. I love this show and all the incredible characters and the lessons they teach.

“None of these would have been possible without my incredible partners, who have taught me more than I could ever explain in writing. I am extremely grateful.”

His co-star George Rexstrew commented: “My Charles forever ❤️.”

Yuyu Kitt, who played Niko, also shared a message, writing, “I will be forever grateful to Dead Boy Detectives and the lessons it taught me and the people it brought into my life.

“Thank you to YOU for taking the time to watch our show, for giving us such loving support and for joining us on this journey. Your messages really resonated with me and I feel incredibly lucky that you all felt such a connection to the characters and the story.”

She added: “It’s hard when people you love leave, but no one ever leaves, find us on Netflix to rewatch the series or come see us, it’s never too late. Case closed for now, see you soon for the next adventure.”

Briana Cuoco, who played Jenny the Butcher, continued, “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post this on my feed, but I decided I wanted my gratitude and love for it to live on here forever.

“It was a wonderful, wild 3-year journey making this show and we were all so excited about the possibility of what was to come. I’m so proud of what we did and I’m so sad that these characters’ lives were cut short.”

“Thank you to the best crew, our writers, all the wonderful directors we got to work with, and every single person behind the camera. My biggest thanks goes to @steveyockey76, @schwartzapproved, @davidrapaport, berlanti, and wb for allowing me to have Jenny. It’s hard to put into words how much I love her and everything she represents. Lastly, the biggest thank you to everyone who watched and fell in love with these characters!”

Kassius Nelson, who played Crystal, said: “What a crazy, wild, wonderful ride these past three years have been! I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work and collaborate with so many incredibly talented creatives and I’m beyond grateful for the experiences I’ve had!”

“We are all deeply sorry for the cancellation of the series and that you won’t be able to see these characters you love grow and live alongside you! We had so much to share with you and so many other characters we wanted you to meet!

“I want to give a huge shout out to our amazing team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this show to life! To @steveyockey76 and @schwartzapproved and our incredible writing team for creating these complex yet lovable characters and allowing us to live in their world (rent-free)!”

“And finally, thank you to YOU for your support and love for our wonderful series that celebrates queerness, chosen family, uniqueness and so much more! I look forward to meeting you in other worlds, through other characters, but until then, Dead Boy Detectives will always be there to keep you company when you need it!”

Showrunners Yockey and Schwartz have previously told RadioTimes.com their hopes for future seasons.

Yockey said: “We’re just in ‘wait and see’ mode right now. We have a plan for Season 2, we have ideas for Season 3 (for) all the Netflix executives who are watching.

“It feels like the kind of show that has a mythology that’s very prevalent, but because it’s a ‘case of the week’, it feels like it could continue like that, so obviously we’d love to do more of it. It was a wonderful experience.”

Added co-showrunner Beth Schwartz: “Our characters are continually growing, so it feels like there’s so much room to explore in their friend group.”

Dead Boy Detectives is available to stream on Netflix. Sandman season 2 is coming soon. Subscribe to Netflix from £4.99 per month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
