Jaipur Watch Company unveils the “Brides of Jaipur” collection, inspired by the city’s architecture and jewelry heritage

Jaipur Watch Company, a renowned Indian luxury watch brand, has unveiled its latest collection, ‘Brides of Jaipur’, a line of women’s jewellery watches designed for the bridal market. Inspired by the rich jewellery traditions of Rajasthan and the architectural wonders of Jaipur, the collection aims to embody the elegance and artistry of the region’s heritage.

A new chapter in watchmaking

The ‘Brides of Jaipur’ collection marks a milestone for Jaipur Watch Company, introducing the brand into the women’s jewellery watch segment. The launch event, held at the historic Sawai Man Mahal, celebrated the art, heritage and culinary traditions of Jaipur and Rajasthan.

Inspiration from Jaipur’s architectural heritage

The collection is inspired by the intricate jaali ornaments of the City Palace in Jaipur, a royal residence renowned for its intricate lattice screens carved from marble and sandstone. The watches feature intricate designs that echo the geometric designs, floral motifs and intertwined arabesques of the City Palace’s jaali ornaments.

“The watch collection is adorned with intricate designs reminiscent of the magnificent jaali ornaments of the City Palace,” the company’s press release explains. “Echoes of these intricate jaali ornaments can be found on select watch dials. Other dials feature delicate filigree details, echoing the ornamental motifs seen in the historic Hawa Mahal and other architectural landmarks of Jaipur. Every curve and line pays homage to the architectural wonders of the city.”

A fusion of jewelry and watchmaking traditions

Beyond architectural inspiration, the collection also incorporates elements of Rajasthan’s rich jewellery craft traditions including filigree, embossing, mother-of-pearl, enamelling and latkans (decorative pendants).

The watches are adorned with radiant gemstones such as rubies and emeralds, reflecting the vibrant colours of traditional Indian bridal wear. The gold accents evoke the timeless elegance of Kundan and Meenakari craftsmanship, techniques deeply rooted in Jaipur’s jewellery heritage.

A conversation with the founder

In an interview with Business Today, Gaurav Mehta, Founder of Jaipur Watch Company, shared his insights on the inspiration behind the collection.

“This collection is inspired by the jewelry styles of Jaipur,” Mehta explains. “Jaipur has its own style of jewelry. You go to the south, you find temple jewelry, you know, you come to Jaipur, you find enamel, you find filigree, you find, you know, different forms of jewelry. So we thought, why not incorporate those styles into watches.”

Mehta revealed that the idea for a women’s jewellery watch collection came from a conversation with Sharmila Sahai, managing director of Hindustan Pencils Ltd. and former managing director of Timex India. Sahai challenged Mehta to create something that would appeal to the 50% of the Indian population that Jaipur Watch Company was not targeting: women.

“She came to my office one day and after a long discussion of five hours, she said, ‘Okay, everything seems fine, you are doing everything right. There is nothing wrong. But the only problem I see is that you are not targeting the 50 per cent population of the country,’” Mehta said.

Inspired by Sahai’s suggestion, Mehta decided to create a collection that would embody the essence of Jaipur’s jewellery heritage while staying true to the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

A timeless gift for brides

The “Brides of Jaipur” collection is positioned as a modern take on the tradition of gifting jewellery to brides on their wedding day. These timepieces are designed to be treasured family heirlooms, symbolising love, tradition and the promise of a beautiful future.

Expansion of Jaipur Watch Company

Besides launching the ‘Brides of Jaipur’ collection, Jaipur Watch Company has expanded its retail presence by opening new stores in Jaipur and Ahmedabad, with two more planned. The company has also set up the Gaurav Mehta Design Foundation to offer internships, giving budding designers an entry point into the watch industry.
