A “terrifying” tornado swept through Hampshire yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction.

No one was injured when the unusual weather event hit Aldershot around midday.

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) said it had tracked the length of the tornado’s movement up to 2 km.

The organization’s investigator posted on Twitter that they had given the tornado a preliminary rating of T1 or T2, which would classify it as a light or moderate tornado.

Her neighbour Louise Le Poidevin said: “I was coming back and it was really cloudy, and when we got home the thunder started and the rain started, it was really torrential rain.

“The trees in the back garden were bent and it was scaring us, everything was lifted off the ground, the leaves were in a big spiral that was going around.

“I thought the doors and windows were going to come in, the noise was terrifying, then a gazebo flew up to the fence next door.

“And then, as soon as it started, 30, 40, 50 seconds later, it was gone.”

Ms Le Poidevin, who runs a grounds maintenance business, added: “I thought it was a tornado because of the spiral, I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m a big weather observer.

“Luckily, no one was hurt, I don’t know how, because it was at noon.”
