New 190-room ‘designer hotel’ planned for Launceston city centre

Launceston is set to welcome a new five-star designer hotel, with plans for a 190-room development in the city centre revealed.

The hotel will be built on the site of the Paterson Street car park and, if approved, will include a range of facilities including restaurants, a spa and function spaces.

The project is a collaboration between local real estate developer Creative Property Holdings (CPH) and an international hotel partner, whose name has not yet been announced.

CPH general manager Chris Billing said the hotel would support increased tourism in and around Launceston, providing visitors with a new accommodation choice in a central location.

“We believe a hotel of this size and international stature will be a game-changer for Launceston’s CBD, supporting tourism demand and increasing visitor spend in and around the city,” he said.

“Over the past seven years, Launceston has lagged significantly behind Hobart in terms of new high-quality hotel rooms, adding only a fifth of the new rooms introduced by Hobart.”

The hotel is expected to create approximately 130 full-time jobs and contribute $76 million to the local economy each year.

During construction, the project is expected to generate 348 direct and indirect jobs and contribute more than $212 million to the local economy.

Architect Telha Clarke will lead the design of the project, while Tasmanian project management company Skyscape will oversee construction.

Speaking on social media on Tuesday morning, Premier Jeremy Rockliff said he thought the development “looks great”.

CPH said it plans to submit a formal development application to Launceston City Council in the coming months, with construction expected to begin in the second half of 2025 if approved.
