Man arrested after Wells Avenue burglary caught on camera

A man is behind bars in connection with a break-in at a Wells Avenue business Sunday evening.

Authorities say Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies were flagged down by a man around 7:40 p.m. on September 29.

The person lives above a business in the 400 block of Wells Avenue and told deputies they were awakened by the sound of breaking glass. Looking out the window, he saw a person breaking the window of the business below. The resident took out his phone and filmed the suspect breaking the window with a chain.

After putting on his shoes, the resident went downstairs to see the suspect leaving on foot.

The resident found police officers on patrol in the area of East 4th Street. He shared his video with them and made a report. The footage was then shared with other MPs in the area.

Less than an hour after police were initially flagged down, the suspect was located outside of Diamonds Casino. Authorities say he was still in possession of the chain allegedly used to commit the crime.

The suspect was then questioned and arrested.

The suspect was charged with felony property destruction (destroying or injuring another’s property, $5,000 or more) and obstruction false reporting. He is currently being held at the Washoe County Detention Center.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

WCSO officials say his arrest resulted from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office’s support of the presence in the East 4th Street corridor. This two-pronged effort utilizes outreach services through our HOPE Team, working with counselors and case managers, as well as enhanced community patrol efforts to combat crime.
