An air ambulance was called to the scene

A main road in East Sussex was closed in both directions for several hours after a “serious” crash involving a car and lorry, police said.

Sussex Police were called to the incident shortly before 7am BST on Tuesday on the A267 at Cross in Hand, near Heathfield.

They involved a sewage tanker heading north and a black Ford Focus heading south, police said.

Four occupants of the car were seriously injured and the driver of the truck was not injured.

Drivers were asked to take a different route

An air ambulance was photographed at the scene.

Police advised drivers to find an alternative route and said diversion signs were in place.

Those who passed by but did not stop at the scene, who may have dash cam or moving footage, are asked to contact police as well as “anyone who saw what happened”.

Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council chairman Gill Snook said the car involved was “so badly mangled” it was “completely unrecognizable”.

She said the accident was close to a known black spot that the council had campaigned on in the past.

Solutions included a roundabout, flashing lights or “anything that would slow traffic as it approached the intersection,” she added.

A spokesperson for East Sussex County Council said: “We have not yet received details of the incident and understand that Sussex Police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident.

“We are unable to comment further at this time.”
