King offers condolences to Nepalese people after deadly floods, landslides

The king sent a message of condolences to the president of Nepal after major floods and landslides left more than 200 people dead.

Rescuers continue to search for the missing after two days of intense rain lashed the valley around the capital, Kathmandu, over the weekend.

Charles said he and the Queen were “heartbroken” at the “devastating effects” on the Himalayan nation and that the UK stood ready to help President Ram Chandra Poudel support those in need.

The disaster came just before the country’s biggest Dasain festival, which begins on Thursday, when people return home to celebrate with their families.

The King said: “My wife and I were heartbroken to see the devastating effects of the floods and landslides in Nepal this weekend.

“Many people in the UK have strong, deep and personal connections to Nepal, not least through the Gurkhas and their exceptional contribution to the British Army.

“Along with the British public, we send our deepest sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones so tragically and who continue to be affected.

“As always, the UK stands ready to help support those who need it most.

“As many people in Nepal begin to celebrate important holidays, I especially hope that families can still come together, even during such an incredibly difficult time. »
