Family are calling for accountability in the death of a man killed by a police officer

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – Calls for accountability for the murder of Brandon Durham filled the halls of the Regional Justice Center Monday morning.

Durham, 43, was shot and killed by a Las Vegas police officer at his home near Sunset Park on Tuesday, November 12. According to information from police, Durham called 911 for help after he said two people were shooting at his house outside.

Friends from Durham who spoke to Channel 13 host Abel Garcia remembered him Friday as a “birth boy,” a passionate sports fan and a devoted father to his 15-year-old daughter.

National civil rights attorneys Lee Merritt and Cannon Lambert are working with Durham’s family. At a news conference Monday, they publicly called for the arrest of 26-year-old Alexander Bookman, the Las Vegas Police Department officer who shot Durham.

Merritt and Lambert say they are “actively investigating possible constitutional violations in the shooting,” according to a news release sent to Channel 13.

Body-worn camera footage of the incident shows Bookman encountering Durham struggling with a 31-year-old suspect identified as Alejandra Boudreaux.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson confirmed he met with the Durham family on Monday and described Durham’s death as “tragic” in a statement to the media.

“It is important to understand that this research is still in its infancy,” Wolfson said.

“It will take weeks, if not months, for the Las Vegas Police Department to complete its investigation; therefore, it would be inappropriate for me to express an opinion on whether criminal charges will be filed. I simply don’t have all the information yet.”

Las Vegas Police Department officials have said this incident is under review by the department’s Critical Incident Review Team, and the investigation is still in its early stages. Wolfson says there are currently two ongoing investigations within LVMPD:

Law enforcement experts weigh in on the deadly shooting by a Las Vegas police officer

“An administrative investigation is underway to determine what, if any, policies were violated and whether discipline should be imposed on any of the officers involved. There is a concurrent criminal investigation to determine whether Metro will file criminal charges against any officer involved in this case. .”

Once the criminal investigation is complete, Wolfson says his office will determine whether criminal charges will be filed against the officers involved in this incident.

Wolfson emphasized that his office has been involved in the case from the beginning.

“One of my most senior prosecutors responded to the scene,” he said, “and representatives from the Attorney General’s Office attended a briefing at the Las Vegas Police Department last week.”

Boudreaux was arrested for several crimes, including home invasion and assault with a deadly weapon. Wolfson added that this office is considering whether to file additional charges against Boudreaux.

Boudreaux was scheduled to appear in court Monday morning but refused to be transported from jail. Judge Amy Wilson has ordered her to appear in court next week “by any means necessary.”
