NI environment: panel considers calls for independent watchdog

Stormont already has the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), which was established 16 years ago, but that is an agency of the devolved government.

Environmental activists have been calling for a new, autonomous organization that can independently hold polluters accountable for years.

Mr Muir said the “many calls for a different environmental management regime and even my own desire to see one are absolutely not a reflection of the dedication and commitment I see every day among NIEA staff”.

“These are public servants who continue to work tirelessly to protect and enhance our natural environment, while regulating activities that could negatively impact it.”

The minister has tasked the panel with developing proposals to improve environmental management, which could include a plan to create an independent environmental protection agency.

This would mean that they would also investigate how such a body would be composed and what its responsibilities should be.

The panel will gather evidence from stakeholders early next year and on that basis prepare a report and recommendations for the Minister by summer 2025.

The Department of Environment, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (Daera) said any proposed changes must be approved by ministers in the executive branch.
