Jonathan Davies announces immediate retirement with emotional statement | Rugby | Sport

Welsh rugby icon Jonathan Davies has called time on his illustrious career, hanging up his boots after a historic journey in the sport. The 36-year-old veteran, who parted ways with the Scarlets last season, was looking for one last stint as a player but chose to prioritize family life following the birth of his first child.

Davies goes out with an impressive 96 appearances for Wales, two tours with the Lions and 209 significant appearances under his belt for the Scarlets, not to mention a spell at French club Clermont Auvergne.

In his heartfelt farewell, Davies expressed: “After stepping away from the game following the end of my final season with the Scarlets, I have made the decision to end my professional rugby career.”

Appreciating his new role as a father, he shared, “I’ve enjoyed a vacation and a summer at home with my family, and I’ve been lucky enough to spend quality time with my newborn son, alongside my wife, as we embark on this new chapter. together as parents.”

Reflecting on his departure from the field, he continued: “I will inevitably miss the camaraderie of training and playing competitively alongside my teammates, but over these last few months I have been able to evaluate all my options and reflect on a career path. which I am incredibly proud of.”

He concluded with gratitude: “There are many people to thank; the dedicated and loyal fans, the quality teammates, the coaches who support me, the team, the friends and, above all, my family, everyone who believed in me.”

Davies expressed his gratitude, saying: “I’m so grateful for the support, especially as I face the challenges and setbacks of injuries. It’s been an incredible journey, with two Lions tours, two Grand Slams and the Pro 12 title, to name a few.

“I was lucky enough to play professionally for 18 years, dedicating everything I have to being the best rugby player I could be.

“Now I look forward to seeing what the next 18 years will bring, as a father, husband and in my next professional chapter. Diolch, Foxy.”

At the height of his career, Davies was once considered one of the best midfielders in the world, winning the player of the series award on the 2017 Lions tour of New Zealand.
