Arrest after ‘road rage’ driver flees attack

A driver has been arrested following a “road rage incident” in which a man was assaulted, police said.

Shortly after midday on Saturday, Wiltshire Police received a report of an assault in Steele Close, Devizes, following an incident in London Road.

Officers stopped the suspect in his car on New Park Street. A police vehicle was struck twice during the encounter before the suspect attempted to flee on foot.

Police later arrested a man, aged in his 20s, on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.

He has since been taken into custody for questioning.

The victim of the attack, a 20-year-old man, was not injured, police confirmed.

Insp Gav Brewster praised the “excellent teamwork” required to make the arrest.

He said: “In the space of around 90 minutes, officers were able to locate the suspect in his vehicle and arrest him, as well as securing the initial scene in Steele Close and obtaining CCTV footage of the incident.

“I am grateful that this incident occurred in the center of Devizes, in the middle of the day, with many witnesses.

“If you have any concerns or anything you want to talk about, please don’t hesitate to speak to one of our officers.”
