Fabrizio Romano points to £115m deal that inspired Ineos’ change in strategy at Man United

There has been a notable change in Manchester United’s transfer strategy since the minority takeover of Ineos.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Ineos and Manchester United’s new hierarchy have taken control in their first summer transfer window since the takeover was completed in December.

They added five key signings to Erik ten Hag’s squad and carried out a much-needed clean-up which saw eight first-team players leave the club.

The excitement and hope of the summer transfer window has not translated into success on the pitch this season, but there are still promising signs that better footballing decisions are being made at the club.

There has been a clear change in transfer strategy, with Ineos targeting young, promising talent who can go on to become superstars at Old Trafford. The oldest signing made in the summer was 26-year-old Noussair Mazraoui.

£115m Premier League deal inspired Man United strategy

According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal signed by a Premier League rival inspired United’s change in strategy, with Ineos desperate not to lose young talent.

He explained via his YouTube channel that Chelsea’s £115m signing of Moises Caicedo helped inspire United’s transfer strategy.

Caicedo was available for just £4.5m when United were linked in 2020, but the club rejected the move and he joined Brighton.

The Red Devils maintained their interest in Caicedo in 2023 ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge for a record transfer fee.

Romano explained that United view Caicedo’s failed move as a failure that “will not happen again” under the new management.

Man United strategy in action with two exciting signings

There’s no point in Ineos talking the talk if they can’t walk the talk – so that’s exactly what they did this summer.

Their transfer strategy was immediately clear, with United eyeing exciting young talent in the summer.

Alongside the five key first-team signings, United have agreed previously unknown deals for teenagers Chido Obi-Martin and Sekou Kone – two wonderkids who the club are confident will become stars.

United fans are already excited about Obi-Martin after watching clips of him training at Carrington. Meanwhile, Ten Hag is impressed by Kone, and the 18-year-old midfielder could make his first-team debut soon.

United have a clear path forward for Obi-Martin, who is expected to be implemented as a third striker in Ten Hag’s team.
