Emmerdale fans slam big baby health story after it is ‘forgotten’ by bosses

SOAP fans are baffled as to why the childhood blood cancer storyline has been forgotten in Emmerdale.

Emmerdale viewers were shocked to learn that baby Evan Fletcher (Malachi McKenzie) was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of childhood blood cancer.

Evan’s low hemoglobin and platelet levels prompt an urgent bone marrow biopsy.

The plot aims to raise awareness about the symptoms of leukemia and how it affects families.

It also explores the stress and strain that prolonged illness can cause a family, including financial strain.

This happened after Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) noticed a new bruise on Evan’s leg and immediately called for surgery.

Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) advised her to take Evan straight to the emergency room, where a pediatrician examined him and ordered blood tests.

Dawn and Billy (Jay Kontzle) feared they would be accused of hurting Evan, but the doctor assured them he was seriously ill.

The blood test results led the pediatrician to recommend an urgent bone marrow biopsy due to Evan’s low hemoglobin and platelet levels.

Overwhelmed by the situation, Dawn was instructed not to feed Evan as he needed to remain without food until after the biopsy.

As he struggled to comfort his son, Billy returned home, visibly upset, and shared the worrying news with Dawn’s father, Will Taylor, and his wife, Kim Tate.

Emmerdale fans attacked the resident and criticized his ‘bad manners’ after the character left his 10-year-old son alone at home

He mentioned the possibility of infection, autoimmune disease or leukemia.

Will and Kim rushed to the hospital just as Evan was being taken for the biopsy, with Will trying to comfort Dawn.

Eventually, the doctor confirmed that Evan had a type of leukemia, leaving Dawn devastated as her worst fears came true.

After her son’s leukemia diagnosis, Dawn stayed in the hospital with Evan while his chemotherapy treatment continued.

Forgotten soap opera stories

The country’s soap operas have had many exciting stories over the years. However, some plots proved to be much less memorable. Here are some forgotten stories from Weatherfield, Walford and more…

Coronation Street

  • Ken and Audrey Romance (2015): Following the death of his wife Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride), Coronation Street original Ken Barlow (William Roache) began to move on in his life. He began to develop a spark with old friend Audrey (Sue Nicholls), with Corrie’s then boss saying it would be like “Ross and Rachel”. In the end, nothing happened and the two remained platonic friends.
  • Beth’s bigamy (2016): Despite being happily married to Kirk (Andrew Whyment), a troubling secret has come to light about Beth Tinker (Lisa George). It turns out she never divorced her first husband, Darryl (Paul Loughran), the father of her son Craig (Colson Smith). Although Craig and Kirk were shocked – and Beth was arrested – the plot didn’t go much further.

EastEnders

  • Kat Slater’s secret son (2017): Capitalizing on the popularity of Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie (Shane Richie), the two were given a spin-off in 2017. Titled ‘Redwater’, the two traveled to Ireland where they met their long-lost son Luke, now named Dermott. Dolan, played by Oisín Stack. Despite the high-tension events during Redwater, Kat appears to have put the experience behind her, as Dermott has not been mentioned since.
  • Alfie’s brain tumor (2015): Upon learning in 2015 that he had a brain tumor, Alfie hid the news from Kat until his trip to Ireland. At the time, actor Shane Ritchie revealed that fans would see a change in Alfie as he battled the illness. It appears that at some point after leaving the Square, he was informed that the tumor was not malignant. When Alfie returned in 2022, fans were confused about what had happened to the storyline.
  • The case of Kathy and Buster (2016): In 2016, Walford legend Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) fell into the arms of convict Buster Briggs, played by Karl Howman. Buster was Shirley Carter’s (Linda Henry) long-time lover and father of her two sons – Mick (Danny Dyer) and Dean (Matt Di Angelo). When Buster left, he begged Kathy to join him, but she refused for the sake of her family. Meanwhile, Buster didn’t even stop to say goodbye to Shirley before leaving with a broken heart. Fans were hoping for a final showdown between the two women, but it never happened.

Emmerdale

  • Jacob’s OCD (2016): After his father, David (Matthew Wolfenden), was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2016, Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) developed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This manifested itself in the form of cleansing. Jacob’s OCD returned briefly a year later after David had another scare when he found a lump. Jacob frantically searched the trash cans for a “lucky coin” that had been accidentally thrown away. Despite stressful situations – such as being groomed by his teacher Maya, losing his fiancée Leanna to a serial killer, dealing with his mother Leyla’s drug addiction and surviving a stabbing – the condition does not appear to have returned.
  • The adventure of Marlon and Charity (2003): Few fans will likely remember the one-night stand between Charity (Emma Atkins) and Marlon (Mark Charnock) in 2003. The two slept together when Charity was with Marlon while she was still under suspicion for her husband’s alleged “murder.” Chris.

Hollyoaks

  • Alex Browning’s Revenge Plot (2014): Fans were hoping for a showdown when Dr. Browning’s son, Alex (Ojan Genc), became his stepmother, Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe). After all, Mercedes, with Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring) and Lindsey Butterfield (Sophie Austin) murdered Alex’s father, double killer Dr. Paul Browning, after he kidnapped and attacked his new wife. In fact, the soap teased that Alex would seek revenge for his father’s death upon arrival. However, he instead gave Cindy’s son Hilton (her half-brother) a life-saving transplant, became his godfather, and left the village soon after.

However, when Dawn and Evan returned to Home Farm, Dawn was immediately overcome with paranoia about the children seeing her sick little brother.

Billy became increasingly concerned about Dawn’s overprotectiveness, but things calmed down when Rose Jackson (Christine Tremarco) gave Dawn a sincere compliment, acknowledging her natural maternal instincts.

This moment brought them closer together as they collaborated on building a fort for the children.

However, viewers are now complaining that the plot has been forgotten in recent episodes.

On the Digital Spy fan forum, one fan said: “It wasn’t a good idea to bring up a subject they’re not really prepared to deal with properly.

“And it seems likely that the new producer doesn’t seem interested in the plot either, as they seem to be jumping from one overwrought plot to another, leaving the others pushed to the background.”

Another argued: “Just short conversations every now and then, with facts thrown in, would be great.”

A third wrote: “Taking on a baby story like this was the wrong choice. It could never be presented properly.”

Meanwhile, Billy is in a desperate attempt to survive for his family and has been involved in illegal fights without his wife Dawn’s knowledge.

Things got even more complicated when Jade, who is a ruthless boxing promoter, told a story claiming that Billy was considering her as a new client.

Will he re-enter Jade’s boxing venture?

Could there be a dark change for Billy ahead?

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV1 or streams from 7am on ITVX.
