This brings the total number of arrests following the incident to four, after a 27-year-old man, also from Huyton, was arrested last month on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. He was released on bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Atkinson, who leads the police’s Firearms Investigation Team (FIT), said: “The investigation into this incident is progressing and we have now arrested a further three men on suspicion of firearms offences.

“Although no one was injured in this incident, it took place in a residential area and would have caused alarm to those living in the area. It was extremely reckless and could have had much worse consequences.

“I want the community to be assured that we are determined to find anyone willing to use a firearm in Merseyside and bring them to justice. We are relentless in pursuing anyone involved in serious organized crime.

“Despite making these arrests, we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Any information from the public is vital and if you know where weapons are being stored I would urge you to contact us or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
