Train involved in incident that resulted in leg amputation in the city center

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — BNSF Railway has confirmed that one of its trains was involved in an incident Monday night that ended with a woman’s leg amputated.

The incident happened on East Harbor Drive, near the convention center, as people were leaving the Rady Shell after a show.

San Diego police said a woman and several other people were trying to crawl around a stopped train when the train moved, causing several people to fall.

The woman fell under the train and was run over, and her leg had to be amputated.

BNSF Railway says the incident is currently under investigation.

On Tuesday, people who work downtown told ABC 10News they regularly see freight trains blocking intersections and crosswalks.

They say people get impatient and start crawling through the cars or around them.

“I see people going through it all the time, I see people walking around, so if the train is almost done to turn around, they’re going to turn around, I see. People jumping sometimes, bikes sometimes, kind of going around it quickly,” said Rhiawna Samudio, who works nearby.

Pedicab drivers in the area say they see the same problem with people getting on and past trains when they are stopped.

“It takes about 20 to 25 minutes, sometimes even longer, then people get desperate and start crossing the train,” said Maycl Soto, a pedicab driver who regularly works in the city center.

The woman involved in Monday’s incident has not been identified.
