Videos show the moment the boat collides with the crane in a major accident

Footage captured the moment a Chinese barge in Taiwan was suspected of colliding with a crane while the boat was docking on Monday.

Videos show the crane next to the carrier ship as it sails through the port in northern Taiwan to dock. The crane tilts to the side and then falls onto the pier, while some people can be seen running away.

The China Container Terminal Corporation crane weighed 750 tons and was 70 to 100 meters (230-328 feet) tall, and was used to lift containers weighing up to 30 tons, according to broadcaster Taiwan News Formosa TV.

The ship was identified as a Yuzhou Qi Hang transport barge, according to the local media outlet. Taiwan Newswhich was docking at the Keelung Port pier. The barge was reported to be capable of carrying a weight of 12,135 tons of cargo, and was 142.8 meters long and 32.2 meters wide, according to Seatrade Maritime.

The crane destroyed five containers when it collapsed onto the pier, but no injuries were reported in relation to the incident, which occurred at around 2pm local time. The cause is now being investigated, ET today reported.

According to Taiwan NewsThe port company’s deputy general manager, Song I-ching, said the boat, which was carrying a new China Container Company crane costing about US$9.3 million, accidentally hit the old one as it docked at Pier 20.

Seatrade Maritime reported that the ship was also carrying two other cranes, while sailing at 1.9 knots. The agency added that no warning was issued to the boat for speeding while docking.

The incident affected container transport operations at Piers 20 and 21, which had been reserved between October 14 and 18 for the transport of the new crane, according to the Keelung port branch of the International Ports Corporation, Taiwan News reported.

Ships that should dock at piers 20 and 21 will be redirected to pier 19, Seatrade Maritime reported, and the other piers are still operating normally.

An assessment of the damage and assessments for compensation will follow, Song said, according to Taiwan News.

A similar incident occurred in June 2021, when a crane at Taiwan’s largest port, Kaohsiung Port, collapsed after being struck by a container ship.

In that incident, one man was injured and two others were trapped in the wreckage.
