American tourist surprised by how ‘clean’ and beautiful Sydney is – and says city is ‘like New York’

An American tourist was “impressed” by Sydney, comparing it favorably to New York City.

The Californian was shocked by the “clean” and beautiful buildings as she walked through downtown on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old said the skyscrapers give off “New York vibes” but with a much higher standard of cleanliness, noting they “don’t smell like human poop.”

The solo traveler praised Sydney’s architecture, especially the Victorian-era sandstone buildings, in the video posted to TikTok.

“Seriously, I feel like I’m in a movie, the buildings are just beautiful,” she said as she strolled through the shops at The Strand Arcade.

‘I feel silly because I’m so shocked by the culture… in a good way too.’

The woman said it was strange to see residents so accustomed to their city and ‘simply going about their day to day’ amidst the beauty that captivates a newcomer.

She revealed that she had “no expectations” outside of the Sydney Opera House and did not even plan to visit; he only came to the US Consulate General after losing his passport in Brisbane.

Some Sydneysiders were shocked to hear his praise for the CBD (pictured), while others said it made them “reflect and appreciate” the city

Some Sydneysiders were surprised by the praise for their city, and some were “confused” by his glowing review.

“I almost choked on my coffee comparing Sydney to New York,” one user commented.

“It’s so weird to hear people being impressed by Sydney,” wrote a second.

“Remove the ‘this reminds me of New York’ which is offensive,” said a third.

Others said the comparison made them “reflect and appreciate” the city.

“Loved seeing you walking around Sydney, I lived there for over 20 years and love seeing it with new eyes,” one user wrote.

Another said the video “really made me smile seeing you enjoying discovering the city.”

The Californian previously told Daily Mail Australia that she fell in love with Australia immediately after landing in Perth at the end of September.

“The whole experience really humbled me. I love the greenery and wildlife you have and how everyone looks out for each other. I’m learning a lot,’ she said.

She almost cried when she saw young children taking public transport with their friends or alone; something rarely seen in his native California.

‘This surprised me, but it tells me how safe you are compared to the states. (In America) you don’t really see kids going out alone like that anymore and if they do, you’re just worried about their safety and wondering where their parents are because it really isn’t safe there,” she said.

She added that Australian food and products were better than those in the United States and that she appreciated the fact that restaurants did not charge for tap water.

‘Australia is super multicultural and diverse and is genuinely a happy place. The only thing I don’t like is that everything closes at 5pm,” she said.

The final comment is a criticism often leveled at Sydney and other Australian cities where high prices and strict regulations have severely restricted nightlife.
