Members of the ‘Squad’ Stay Silent as Other Democrats Celebrate the Assassination of Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar

Several members of the ultra-progressive “The Squad” did not join their Democratic colleagues on Thursday in applauding the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

The Israeli military announced on Thursday that its troops found and eliminated Sinwar in Gaza. He was among the Jewish state’s most wanted criminals, especially due to his role in plotting the deadly Hamas terrorist attack on October 7.

The US Department of Justice formally charged Sinwar in September for his role in the attacks. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who is running for Senate in the Golden State, wrote that he hopes Sinwar’s death ends the war.

“Yahya Sinwar was the mastermind of the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and the murder of countless Americans,” Rep. Schiff wrote. “Now he has been brought to justice by courageous members of the IDF. May his death mark the beginning of the end of the war and the return of all hostages.”

Also reacting was Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, who has been an outspoken supporter of Israel during its conflict with Hamas.

“I want to salute Israel and celebrate the elimination of Yahya Sinwar – a necessary step towards any lasting future peace,” he wrote. “Eliminating the mastermind of the 7/10 massacre is the definition of justice served. My vote and my voice for Israel will not waver.”

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., reflected on Sinwar’s horrific legacy.

“Dear American Media: Please do not praise Yahya Sinwar as a ‘father figure’ or a ‘moral compass’ or a ‘charismatic speaker’ or an Abrahamic egalitarian fighting for ‘equality of Muslims, Jews and Christians,’” he wrote. “Sinwar’s barbaric legacy of bloodlust has been deadly for Israelis and even more deadly for Palestinians. He died as he lived: a monster.”

Several members of the ultra-progressive Congressional group “The Squad” were notoriously silent, many of whom strongly criticized Israel and urged their colleagues to support a ceasefire in the region.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., did not join their Democratic colleagues in celebrating Sinwar’s death shortly after the news broke . Several members of the “Squad” did not return The Nat’s requests for comment.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was involved in a heated online exchange with Sen. Fetterman earlier this week over what she called a “shadowy attempt to bury,” condemning his claim that Israeli Prime Minister , Benjamin Netanyahu, is to blame for the war. The senator said that the conflict “is 100% Hamas’s.”
