Couple shocked by ‘scary’ discovery in their Victorian home after seeing hole in the floor

A couple were shocked by an unexpected discovery in the Victorian home they are renovating.

When Emma Harrison and Rhys Stainer bought the old Malvern Hills property last year, they were surprised by a “creepy” feature beneath a hole in the kitchen floor.

After drilling around the edges of the hole, they realized there was a 20-foot-deep pit in the middle of the kitchen floor.

In a TikTok video that has racked up more than 10 million views, Emma told her followers: “Last year my partner and I bought this old Victorian house and it came with a weird little feature under the kitchen floor.

‘It turns out this little hole in the ground turned into this… They’re really cool, but they’re also really scary.’

She then filmed the impressive well, which they believe dates back to at least the 1880s, after looking at historical maps.

Now they are planning to put a glass cover over the well to make it a highlight in the room.

In another video, Emma, who is a designer, added: “Yes, there’s a 20-foot pit in the middle of our kitchen floor, and yes, that’s probably what everyone’s most interested in.

‘Last year we bought this big, beautiful Victorian house that needs a lot of care. We’re slowly bringing this place back to life and it’s full of quirky surprises.

And responding to people’s questions, she confirmed that there is no smell coming from the well, there is no mold and that it is in good condition.

Not everyone was convinced, however, with viewers taking to the comments to comment that it looked like something out of a ‘horror film’.

They wrote: ‘I saw The Ring. close everything’;

‘Don’t you think there’s a reason why it was cemented with like 50 layers’;

‘Cool feature, but do you really want to look into the abyss when all the lights are off?’;

‘Glass is cool and all, but what about a trap door for guests who are too late to be welcomed’;

‘You just opened a portal for ghosts, girl’; ‘This Is How Horror Films Based on True Beginnings’;

“100% chance your house is haunted.”

The unique property also has an antique wine cellar, which they plan to transform into a speakeasy-style bar next year.

The couple, who live there with their two Rottweilers, are also renovating the building’s large farmstead.

Emma and Rhys aren’t the only couple to have discovered a well at home.

First-time buyer Shaniah Lloyd, 28, and her partner Ross Bennett, 25, were lifting the floorboards of their Edwardian home when they unearthed the ring of bricks with a deep hole in front of the bay window.

When Kevin Mort, 48, decided to install his own underfloor heating in his 18th-century home, he was surprised to find a 300-year-old well filled with water, just inches below the dining table.
