ITV health expert Dr Amir Khan has issued advice to prevent the spread of infections as the colder months approach. With colds and flu common, the TV doctor took to Instagram to share the five best ways to reduce your chances of catching a cold.

Dr. Khan warned that infections are circulating, with everyone apparently catching a cold. One of the key points Dr. Khan highlights is the importance of ventilating indoor spaces, as recent research shows that cold viruses spread through aerosols as well as droplets, meaning ventilation is key.

In a stern message, Khan said: “I’m not kidding when I say we are seeing high levels of viral infections, colds and flu.” He added that there isn’t much doctors can do about viral infections like antibiotics can’t do. don’t work, which means your immune system will have to fight them off.

Dr. Khan emphasized the importance of washing your hands to reduce the risk of catching a cold. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating or preparing food and after using the bathroom. Many things that normally should not be said when it comes to washing your hands, including coming into contact with someone who has a cold or after wiping your nose, are not being done by everyone. He urged people to remember that “the main way cold viruses spread is through droplets that can get on your hands.”

Avoiding touching your face too much is another easy way to avoid catching a cold, according to Dr. Khan. Cold viruses can spread from your hands to your eyes, nose, or mouth. Cold viruses can also live in places people don’t expect, including door handles and other common surfaces from work desks to kitchen countertops, so disinfecting regularly would be beneficial.

In a situation where you are unable to use soap and water, an alcohol-based disinfectant is a great alternative. While Dr. Khan admits this isn’t as good as soap and water, it’s better than nothing and can still prevent the spread of infections.

One “super important” tip provided by Dr. Khan is to keep your immune system “on top.” Get enough sleep, eat a healthy, balanced diet with lots of plants, and exercise so your body is ready to fight germs. The health expert said: “I cannot emphasize enough the importance of these three things.”

For those who have a cold, it is advisable to stay home when possible and cough and sneeze into tissues. Throw them away and wash your hands immediately
