Tony Bennett announces immediate retirement

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – UVA men’s basketball head coach Tony Bennett announced his immediate retirement on Friday, Oct. 18.

Bennett spent 15 seasons with UVA basketball, guiding the team to one NCAA championship, two ACC tournament titles and six ACC regular season championships.

Earlier this year, Bennett signed a contract extension that would keep him in Charlottesville until April 2030.

“Tony Bennett is critical to our efforts to compete for championships in this new model of college athletics,” said UVA athletic director Carla Williams at the time of his contract renewal in June.

The announcement came as a surprise to many, especially considering Bennett’s talk last week about his long-term team-building plan at UVA.
