Richmond News: Suspect charged in hand-digging incident at frozen yogurt store

Days after a man was recorded walking behind the counter of a frozen yogurt store in Richmond, BC, and picking up products with his hand, a suspect has been criminally charged.

Richmond RCMP confirmed Friday that a mischief charge has been approved against Ahmed Mohamed Hassan.

“Hassan was released under conditions that included not attending the business,” the corporal said. Adriana O’Malley told CTV News in an email.

The incident happened at Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt on Wednesday and was partially caught on camera.

The video shows a man picking up a display case and filling a cone with his hand, then leaving the store. As he leaves, he can be heard praising the frozen yogurt and telling viewers to “take care of themselves.”

Store owner Bart Wotherspoon told CTV News there had been multiple encounters with the same person before Wednesday, including on Thanksgiving.

“He came in and ordered a cone and left without paying,” Wotherspoon said.

The man’s photo is now displayed on the door of the frozen yogurt shop and he has been permanently banned from the premises, the owner said.
