Liverpool fans on red alert as Virgil van Dijk confirms contract talks

Liverpool captain Vigil van Dijk has offered a key update on his contract extension negotiations at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s side remain top of the Premier League table after a 2-1 home win over Chelsea on their return from the October international break, but contracts remain a hot topic in the red half of Merseyside.

Van Dijk’s current contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season, alongside fellow stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Former Reds captain Graeme Souness has tipped Van Dijk as the most likely of the trio to sign an extension with Alexander-Arnold attracting rumors of interest from Real Madrid.

All three are eligible to negotiate free transfers to non-Premier League clubs from the start of 2024, but no moves can be completed until the summer.

As fans await updates, Van Dijk has become the first to openly state that negotiations are ongoing, with the club expecting a decision before the end of 2024.

“I feel really good, physically, mentally and I’m having fun. What the future brings, I have no idea at the moment, but as I said in previous answers, discussions are ongoing with the right people and when the time comes to make a decision, I think you (the media) will know too,” as per quotes from BBC Sport.

“I can only say that discussions have started and we will see. My total focus is on Liverpool, on wanting to win the games that are in front of me and nothing else.”
