The Milwaukee Police Department on Monday, October 21st released new body camera video of a police standoff and shooting that occurred near 68th and Hope on October 4th.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Monday, Oct. 7, that a man who was found dead inside a residence near 68th and Hope after an hours-long standoff was shot by a police officer. . The coroner identified the deceased as Deonandre Martin.

Case details

The Milwaukee Police Department said officers responded to a report of a shooting near 68th and Hope around 8:30 a.m. that Friday. When officers arrived at the scene, they saw three people fleeing a house – jumping from a second-floor balcony. One of the three suffered multiple gunshot wounds and officers took all three to safety.

Moments later, police said the suspect exited the home through the second-story porch. He had a gun. Officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but MPD said the suspect did not comply. An officer then shot the suspect and the man returned to the residence.

A tactical setup was established and negotiators attempted a peaceful resolution. After there was no response from the suspect, the Tactical Enforcement Unit entered the residence and found the 33-year-old suspect dead from a gunshot wound.

The shooting victim who fled the residence, a 33-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. No one else was hit by gunfire.

MPD officials said the officer who fired the weapon during the incident is a 28-year-old man with more than three years of service. He was placed on administrative duty, as is routine in investigations of officer-involved shootings.

This incident, as with all critical incidents, will be subject to administrative review in accordance with department policy to ensure adherence to department law enforcement training, policies, procedures and best practices.

The Milwaukee Area Investigation Team is investigating this incident. The Brookfield Police Department is the lead agency.
