A Freeze Warning has been issued for the Outer Southeast Portland Metro Station for Thursday

The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning at 5:51 p.m. Wednesday, effective for the Outer Southeast Portland Metro between midnight and 10 a.m. Thursday.

The weather service states: “Frost formation occurs at temperatures up to 34 degrees.”

“Frost could damage sensitive open-air vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants can die if they are not covered,” explains the weather service. “Take steps now to protect sensitive outdoor plants from the cold. Consider temporarily bringing outdoor potted plants indoors if they are sensitive to cold. Consider temporarily covering sensitive plants with a light cotton fabric (e.g. sheets, thin blankets) as this will help retain heat and provide frost protection for your plants.”

What to do if there is a frost warning?

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds and sky cover favor frost development. This is most likely when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, the frost is severe enough to end the growing season and is then referred to as a “killing frost.”

According to the weather service, if your area is under a frost warning, cover sensitive plants before the sun goes down to retain heat near the plants, or bring plants indoors overnight if possible.
